What to Expect When You Start Therapy

Starting therapy is a courageous act of self-care — and at Monarchs Therapy, our goal is to make the process feel as welcoming, transparent, and empowering as possible. Whether this is your first time in therapy or a return to it, we’ll walk beside you with compassion and clarity every step of the way.

Step 1: Consultation – Getting to Know You

It all begins with a free 15-minute consultation. This is your space to share what’s bringing you to therapy, ask questions, and see if we’re a good fit.

During your consultation, we’ll:

  • Listen to your goals and areas of concern
  • Explain how therapy works and what approaches we use
  • Discuss rates, insurance, and scheduling options
  • Help you determine if Monarchs Therapy feels like the right home for your healing journey

 

Our goal is to ensure that from the very first call, you feel heard, respected, and supported.

Step 2: Match – Finding the Right Therapist

The connection between you and your therapist is one of the most important factors in successful therapy. We take time to thoughtfully match you with a clinician whose experience, personality, and approach align with your needs.

We consider:

  • Areas of expertise (trauma, anxiety, grief, relationships, etc.)
  • Preferred modalities (EMDR, CBT, mindfulness, expressive arts, etc.)
  • Cultural responsiveness and lived experience
  • Your preference for in-person or telehealth sessions

Therapy works best when you feel comfortable, safe, and seen. That’s why the right fit matters so much to us.

Step 3: First Session – Beginning the Journey

Your first full session is where we begin to build trust, safety, and understanding.

During this session, your therapist will:

  • Review confidentiality and informed consents
  • Explore your background, story, and current challenges
  • Identify strengths, coping skills, and what you hope to achieve
  • Collaboratively create your initial treatment goals

You’ll leave feeling grounded, with a clear sense of direction and a plan for how we’ll move forward together.

There’s no pressure to have everything figured out — therapy unfolds at your own pace.

Step 4: Progress – Growth Through Collaboration

Therapy is a journey — not a straight line — and it looks different for everyone. At Monarchs Therapy, we believe in ongoing reflection and collaboration to make sure we’re meeting your needs along the way.

Together, we’ll:

  • Track your emotional, behavioral, and relational progress
  • Adjust goals as your life and priorities evolve
  • Revisit coping strategies, insights, and milestones
  • Review progress every few months to ensure therapy continues to align with your goals
  • Celebrate growth, resilience, and the changes you’ve worked hard for
Progress isn’t about perfection — it’s about noticing how far you’ve come and staying intentional about where you’re going.

Step 5: Continuity & Next Steps

Some clients stay in therapy for a few months; others continue long-term for deeper self-growth and maintenance. We’ll collaborate to determine what feels right for you — and when the time comes to transition or graduate from therapy, we’ll do so with care, reflection, and resources to support your next chapter.
