EMDR Therapy

At Monarchs Therapy, we are committed to helping you heal, grow, and thrive. One of the specialized services we offer is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, a highly effective, evidence-based approach for addressing trauma, anxiety, depression, and more.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR Therapy is a structured and scientifically validated therapeutic approach that helps people process and heal from distressing life experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses on helping your brain “unstick” from painful memories and reprocess them in a healthier way.

Trauma and emotional distress can become stored in the brain and body, causing symptoms such as flashbacks, anxiety, or self-doubt. EMDR works by engaging the brain’s natural healing processes, allowing you to process these memories safely and effectively.

How Does EMDR Work?

EMDR therapy is organized into eight distinct phases, each carefully designed to guide you through the healing process:

History-Taking and Treatment Planning

Your therapist will get to know you, discuss your goals, and identify the memories or issues you’d like to address. This phase sets the foundation for your healing journey.

Preparation

We’ll build trust and establish a safe, supportive space. Your therapist will explain the process, introduce techniques to help you manage distress, and ensure you feel ready to begin.

Assessment

Together, we’ll identify the specific memory, emotions, physical sensations, and negative beliefs associated with the distressing experience. This provides a roadmap for the work ahead.

Desensitization

Using bilateral stimulation (e.g., eye movements, tapping, or sounds), we’ll help your brain process the memory. Over time, the emotional charge of the memory will decrease, leaving you with a sense of calm.

Installation

In this phase, we’ll strengthen positive beliefs to replace the negative ones. For example, “I am unlovable” might shift to “I am worthy of love and respect.”

Body Scan

Your therapist will guide you to notice any lingering physical sensations tied to the memory. This helps ensure that the trauma is fully processed on both emotional and physical levels.

Closure

At the end of each session, we’ll use calming techniques to ensure you leave feeling grounded and safe, even if the memory hasn’t been fully resolved yet.

Reevaluation

In future sessions, we’ll revisit your progress to assess whether further work is needed or if new memories have emerged that require attention.

This structured approach ensures your healing journey is both thorough and tailored to your unique needs.

How Virtual EMDR Works:

In virtual sessions, we use secure, HIPAA-compliant platforms to ensure your privacy. Techniques like screen-based visual movements or guided tapping exercises are seamlessly adapted for online sessions.
