EMDR therapy is organized into eight distinct phases, each carefully designed to guide you through the healing process:
Your therapist will get to know you, discuss your goals, and identify the memories or issues you’d like to address. This phase sets the foundation for your healing journey.
We’ll build trust and establish a safe, supportive space. Your therapist will explain the process, introduce techniques to help you manage distress, and ensure you feel ready to begin.
Together, we’ll identify the specific memory, emotions, physical sensations, and negative beliefs associated with the distressing experience. This provides a roadmap for the work ahead.
Using bilateral stimulation (e.g., eye movements, tapping, or sounds), we’ll help your brain process the memory. Over time, the emotional charge of the memory will decrease, leaving you with a sense of calm.
In this phase, we’ll strengthen positive beliefs to replace the negative ones. For example, “I am unlovable” might shift to “I am worthy of love and respect.”
Your therapist will guide you to notice any lingering physical sensations tied to the memory. This helps ensure that the trauma is fully processed on both emotional and physical levels.
At the end of each session, we’ll use calming techniques to ensure you leave feeling grounded and safe, even if the memory hasn’t been fully resolved yet.
In future sessions, we’ll revisit your progress to assess whether further work is needed or if new memories have emerged that require attention.
This structured approach ensures your healing journey is both thorough and tailored to your unique needs.
